Anthony Perkins is so good in Psycho as Norman Bates that, not only did he deserve an Oscar for his portrayal,
but he deserved a stay in a mental hospital
just to make sure he was sane.
He makes the movie.
He is the cold, monsterous center of that film.
All the while playing innocent put-upon youth.
Inside—a fractured mind working against itself.
Grinding back and forth.
If one takes a great idea from a great author such as Robert Bloch and gives it to a great director such as Alfred Hitchcock and gives said director great actors like Perkins, Leigh and Miles—
sometimes a great film comes out the other end.
And so,
you get…
PSYCHO.
