30 THEATRICAL TERRORS: Don't Look Now (Day 10)

Here we have a serious horror film exploring how a couple chooses to cope with the grief of losing their young daughter. It also happens to be a supernatural thriller involving psychic premonitions.

Most importantly, Don’t Look Now is an excellent film by Nicholas Roeg starring Donald Sutherland (John Baxter) and Julie Christie (Laura Baxter) as the couple in question. They travel to Venice after the husband accepts a commission to restore a church not long after their daughter drowned.

Not long after they arrive, the wife encounters two older women who happen to be sisters. The blind sister mentions that she is psychic and that she can see their deceased daughter. Shortly, the wife meets with the sisters again—this time for a seance where they warn her that her husband is in danger and should leave Venice.

What follows is the building of suspense, menace, the influx of paranoia-inducing circumstances and the rest of a very fine film.
