30 THEATRICAL TERRORS: Angel Heart (Day 16)

Based on William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel, Falling Angel,
ANGEL HEART is an Alan Parker noir-horror film about a New York P.I. (Mickey Rourke’s Harry Angel) hired by Robert De Niro as an enigmatic figure known as Louis Cypher to solve the disappearance of a singer named Johnny Favorite.

The gig takes the investigator to New Orleans, where a series of occult murders seem to be linked to his case. And as the case and Harry’s life descend into chaos and the dark crimes he is trying to solve, the mystery deepens. And he gets involved with an alluring young woman named Epiphany (played by Lisa Bonet).

It isn’t long before the twisted plot incriminates Harry and he finds himself on the wrong side of the law and, as his desperation grows, he finds himself willing to go further than he should to cut himself loose.

The result is a fine effort by all, easily Rourke’s best film and a hell of a cameo performance by De Niro.

I cannot say more, let’s see what the trailer sez:
