Masking Fear: Countdown To Halloween (Day 25)

THIS IS THE OLDEST MASK KNOWN TO EXIST, DATING BACK TO 7000 BC

Masks have a power all their own.

Since the dawn of mankind’s existence, masks have been used for both ceremonial and practical purposes.  Whether for performance, protection, disguise or entertainment, they project mystery and power.
That mystery and power can lend itself to fear for those who may be unsure of who or what lies behind that mask—what it hides or what the mask itself projects about the wearer.

Of course, on Halloween, it is believed the wearing of masks originated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isles of Man and Wales and may have involved impersonating the souls of the dead and exchanging songs or verses or tricks in exchange for treats or offerings.

The wearing of the mask is believed to also disguise the wearer from the souls of the dead who were believed to be out wandering in the night on Hallow’s Eve as well.

And now a review of Hallowe’en Masks old and new…
