30 THEATRICAL TERRORS: The Blackcoat's Daughter (Day 23)

The Blackcoat’s Daughter AKA February was written and directed by Anthony Perkins’ son, Oz. It follows the tale of two Catholic schoolgirls who get left behind at their deserted boarding school during winter break, where the nuns are rumored to be satanists.

There is a parallel plot in which an escapee from an insane asylum is travelling alone who meets an older couple linked to the other storyline. The two stories do meet up in the end, but they are distinctly separate.

The cold and isolation are effective tools to darken the mood and thoughts of the viewer and are used well here. Also, the minimalist script stays away from overexplaining or revealing too much to the viewer. It brings thoughts of Suspiria, The Shining and The Thing (on a tiny budget).

It’s an effective and disturbing effort and one that will make a second viewing a little more rewarding.

Oz Perkins also wrote and directed another worthwhile effort in the horror indie,
"I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House".
